Four placements, one lit yard.

Almost every landscape lighting plan is a mix of the same four placements. Knowing them makes it easier to say what you want.

How each one works

In each drawing the amber block is the fixture and the glow is where its light lands.

Uplighting

Fixture on the ground, aimed up. Used on trees, columns, tall shrubs and the corners of a house. It gives the yard height and is usually the first thing people notice from the street.

Moonlighting

Fixture mounted high in a tree, aimed down through the branches. The light falls on the lawn or patio below in soft, broken patches, much like moonlight.

Path lighting

Short post fixtures spaced along a walkway, steps or driveway edge. Each one lights the ground around it, so you can see where you are stepping without lighting up the whole yard.

Wall washing and grazing

Fixture close to a wall, aimed across it. Set back a little, it washes the wall evenly. Set right at the base, it grazes the surface and brings out stone or brick texture.
